A few weeks ago, a business friend of mine called to ask me about the importance of networking in his new area.  He has a successful business and does great things for business professionals and individuals.  He asked me why networking was currently such a struggle. 

“I think I do network and explain what I do for people and businesses when they ask or if we just meet and shake hands.” He said.

When I asked him to introduce himself to me as if he didn’t know me, we had just met.  I like this kind, caring, wonderful, gentle man very much and admire what he has done in the coaching and hypnosis industry.

But, I had to say, “STOP”….I have no idea what you do or what I could possibly be interested in, and I am ready to run…….”  Note: We are still great friends… but after a few minutes, he totally understood the simple changes he could make to get more appointments and meet more people.

My personal definition of networking

Networking is the intentional practice of building and strengthening authentic connections by developing the skills to clearly and confidently introduce yourself and spark curiosity and interest in others. It involves actively nurturing relationships to grow your business, while also serving as a connector to support others. Effective networking enhances your knowledge, expands your sphere of influence, and empowers you to contribute meaningfully to your community through a trusted circle of strategic partners.
